As a sweeping federal investigation has exposed a long-running scheme to fix NCAA Division I men’s basketball games, Raj Gadhok, Co-Chair of Mandelbaum Barrett PC’s Litigation Practice, joined the discussion to provide critical legal context on one of the most significant college sports scandals in decades.

In a recent ONNJ Sports interview, Raj spoke with host Mike Black about federal prosecutors’ recent indictment of 26 individuals in what authorities describe as a transnational criminal enterprise involving point-shaving and illegal sports gambling tied to both U.S. college basketball programs and international professional basketball leagues.  Drawing on his experience in representing professional and amateur athletes, Raj explained the serious integrity issues at the heart of the case and the potential ripple effects for the universities and staff members involved.

Raj noted how today’s evolving NCAA sports landscape, in dealing with legalized online gambling and lucrative NIL opportunities, has increased pressure on student-athletes and institutions alike.  “The court papers … reference attempts to fix the final scores of 29 different games by way of point shaving, which is perhaps the most serious violation when it comes to the integrity of the game,” Raj said, and added that the student-athletes involved, per the indictments, received between $10,000 and $30,000 per game.

He further opined that the consequences of the conduct alleged, if supported by adequate evidence, may extend well beyond the players named in the indictments, particularly if additional coaches or staff members are implicated.  “Those who were involved … will have to deal with infractions such as failure to monitor, lack of institutional control,” Raj explained, adding that “there could be significant suspensions, ban from post-season play, and forfeiture of prior successes.”

“I would expect there will be much more information and evidence that’s yet to come,” said Raj. “I’m sure there’s much more to uncover and it will certainly be interesting to see where this goes.”
