As the World Cup matches bring international attention to the New York and New Jersey region, hospitality businesses are closely evaluating whether the anticipated economic benefits will meet expectations. In a recent online interview on ONNJ, Damian P. Conforti, Chair of Mandelbaum Barrett PC’s Hospitality Law Group and Legal Counsel to the New Jersey Restaurant and Hospitality Association, discussed the challenges and opportunities facing restaurants, bars, and hotels during one of the world’s largest sporting events. While some businesses have yet to experience the projected surge in revenue, Damian noted that the tournament remains in its early stages and that key matches, including the championship, may still generate significant economic activity throughout the region.
Drawing on lessons from prior large-scale events, including the 2014 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium, Damian emphasized the importance of strategic planning, operational readiness, and realistic expectations. He encouraged hospitality operators to focus on their unique brand strengths, whether through location, atmosphere, specialty offerings, or fan engagement opportunities. By understanding customer traffic patterns, staffing appropriately, and creating memorable guest experiences, businesses can position themselves to maximize both immediate and long-term benefits from increased visitor activity.
Damian also highlighted an often-overlooked legal consideration for businesses seeking to capitalize on major sporting events: intellectual property and sponsorship restrictions. Similar to the limitations surrounding use of the term “Super Bowl,” FIFA closely controls the use of its trademarks and sponsorship rights. Businesses hosting watch parties or promotional events must ensure their advertising and marketing efforts comply with applicable rules. In addition, Damian stressed the critical role of social media in building brand awareness and fostering long-term customer loyalty, noting that the greatest return on investment may come not from a single tournament, but from converting first-time visitors into repeat customers.
