As of March 1, 2025, the New Jersey Division of Taxation has begun issuing gross income tax refunds to taxpayers. Martin D. Hauptman, Partner in our Tax, Trusts, and Estates Practice Groups at Mandelbaum Barrett PC, shares important updates on the refund process and how this announcement is particularly significant for individuals and businesses who are beginning to check their income tax refund status. Understanding the refund processing timeline is essential for managing expectations and ensuring smooth financial planning.

When Can You Check Your Refund Status?

As taxpayers file their returns, the Division of Taxation has set guidelines for when they can start checking their refund status, depending on the type of return filed. For those who file electronically, refunds will typically be processed and available for status tracking four weeks after submission. Taxpayers who submit paper returns will need to wait a longer period, with status updates becoming available 12 weeks after mailing their returns. If a return requires additional processing, or if it was sent via certified mail, the timeline for tracking may extend to 15 weeks or more. Additionally, it’s essential to remember that not all refunds are processed in the same way, so even if a return is filed on time, the time it takes to process may vary.

Delays for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Filers

Taxpayers who have claimed the New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) should be aware that their refunds may face delays; these returns require additional review due to the complexity and eligibility requirements surrounding the EITC. This extended review process is designed to ensure compliance with the tax credit’s guidelines and prevent fraud, but it can be frustrating for taxpayers waiting for their refunds. If you are eligible for the EITC,  ensure you are monitoring your refund status closely to stay informed of any potential delays.

Best Practices for a Smoother Refund Process

To help expedite the refund process and avoid unnecessary delays, taxpayers should follow some basic best practices. First and foremost, filing electronically is strongly recommended, as it speeds up the processing time and ensures quicker access to refund status updates. Double-checking all the information on your return, including Social Security numbers, direct deposit details, and withholding amounts, is crucial to avoid any errors that might slow down processing. Ensuring that your return is complete and accurate will help avoid unnecessary delays.

Additionally, keeping copies of all tax documents (such as W-2 forms, 1099s, and proof of credits claimed) can be invaluable if any issues arise with your return or if you are contacted by the Division of Taxation for clarification. Lastly, taxpayers should be diligent in monitoring the Division of Taxation’s website for updates regarding the status of their refunds and any changes to the processing schedule, especially if there are broader tax policy changes or procedural adjustments.

Tax season can be an overwhelming time for many individuals, but staying proactive and informed about the timeline for refund processing can make the experience much smoother.  For more information or legal guidance on tax matters, please feel free to contact Martin D.
